    Gold DofE Expedition

I’ve spent the last few days supervising a Gold Duke of Edinburgh qualifying expedition for a group of pupils from Oswestry School. In fact, it was a group that I trained back at the end of March, so it was great to catch up with them and see them embark on the real thing after [...]

Canadian Cadet Climbing Course in North Wales

I’ve been very privileged to spend the last week working with a group of 6 Canadian Cadets on a rock climbing course in North Wales. They are part of a larger group of cadets that have been selected to come over to the UK for several weeks as part of an exchange. This week, they [...]

    Gullies on the Buachaile

Knowing I had an 7 hour drive home ahead of me to get home, we made an early start to our day on Buachaille Etive Mor. With a short walk in from the road, this is a great place to gain altitude and get in the snow quickly. At lower levels the snow was well [...]

    Alfie’s First Lead

The eldest of my 2 sons (Alfie – aged 12) has been showing an increasing interest in climbing over recent months. He’s done quite a bit of bottom rope climbing, both indoors and out, during the last few years but has started to show an interest in leading.
For those that are not familiar with ‘leading’, [...]

    Bronze DofE Training

The Duke of Edinburgh expedition season really seems to get going each May, and this weekend saw pupils from Oswestry School getting stuck in to their training with a weekend based out of Carrog Station campsite, along the River Dee to the west of Llangollen. As is normally the case, they came with varying degrees of [...]

    The Great Climb

Dave MacLeod and Tim Emmett successfully managed to climb a route called ‘The Usual Suspects’ on the Isle of Harris at the weekend. Graded at E9 7a, this is 5 pitches of serious climbing by two of the top traditional climbers in the world.
Thankfully for the rest of us mere mortals, the BBC were on [...]

    Canoe Trip on the Canal

Today was my last day this week working with the kids from Ellesmere College’s Adventure Plus activity program. Having already had a go at rock climbing, kayaking and orienteering, I figured it would be a great opportunity to take advantage of some sunshine and go for a journey in the canoes. Here in Ellesmere we [...]

    Basic Mountain Bike Skills

Day 3 of Ellesmere College’s Adventure + Easter holiday club had me doing a 3rd activity in 3 days. I love the variety I can get from my work (and play!) and this week is a perfect example, working on different things every day of the week. Today was the turn of mountain biking.

School holidays are a time for having fun with friends – and that includes the staff! A colleague’s birthday seemed to be a good excuse for a number of the staff from Lakelands School to get together at the Adventure Ropes Course for an afternoon of fun and fear.
