Canoeing on the Canal with Adventure +

Following on from Tuesday, when I took the Adventure + group canoeing on The Mere, we decided to go for a canoe journey on the canal. Last week’s group had gone on the River Severn, but the wind during this Tuesday’s session meant that we weren’t able to cover as much, so the canal seemed a more appropriate venue for today.

We got on the water at Lower Frankton, and made our way steadily downstream. It took a little while for some to acclimatise to being in a relatively narrow stretch of water, as opposed to a large lake, but most got the hang of things pretty quickly. There’s a human tendency to always blame someone (or something) else when things don’t go right, and a canoe often provides the perfect venue for this to surface when paddling with someone else. This was certainly the case today, but things remained good humoured so I was happy to let it run it’s course and enjoy the occasional quiet chuckle.

The appearance of the odd canal boat coming the other way, caused a few concerned expressions on people’s faces. However, once they realised that it wasn’t far to get to the side and stay out of the way of these bigger boats, everyone simply took it in their stride and enjoyed waving to those enjoying a water borne holiday.

Surprisingly quickly, we found ourselves arriving at Queen’s Head where, once again, our transport was waiting for us to get us back to Ellesmere College in time for lunch.
