Family Paddle

Looking nervous at the get in
Looking nervous at the get in

With the busyness of Christmas behind us, and just a few days till the kids go back to school, today’s fine weather came at just the right time to get a day out with the family. After a bit of deliberation, we decided to go for a gentle paddle down the canal and stop off for a pub lunch.

After sorting all the logistics of kit and shuttling vehicles into the right places, we got on the water near Lower Frankton and started our paddle towards the Queens Head. Although it might have been a fine day, the water was understandably cold, and the kids where a little nervous of tipping in unexpectedly.

The idea was for a relaxed paddle, but sometimes kids just can’t resist creating a bit of competition and we soon found ourselves being challenged to a race. In reality, while Hazel and I cruised smoothly along, the kids raced from bank to bank as they pin-balled their way along the canal. A definite example of the advantages of technique over muscle. At least they used up lots of energy!

We managed to time our journey just right and arrived at the Queens Head in perfect time for lunch. It’s the first time I’ve actually eaten there, and can recommend it if you’re considering a visit. All in all, it was a fantastic day out, made all the more special by being able to enjoy the Shropshire countryside in good weather with family.
