Indoor Climbing with Ellesmere Primary School

In recent weeks, I’ve done a number of sessions for some of the pupils from Ellesmere Primary School. Today was the first of two indoor climbing sessions at the Plas Madoc Leisure Centre. There were only 6 pupils taking part, after another couple dropped out due to the seasonal illness going around, but we made the most of our time.

After a quick safety brief, we got stuck into a bit of bouldering, setting a few challenges and competitions. Some seemed to take to the wall quite naturally, while others took some time in working out how to use the holds effectively and move in a controlled manner. However, everyone made progress to the point where we were able to get harnesses on and climb higher with the ropes.

One member of the group got a bit scared half way up the wall on her first climb and wouldn’t go up or down. After several minutes of encouragement, it became apparent that she wasn’t going to move without help and that I would have to go up to join her. It was actually the first time I’ve ever had to use a ‘rescue’ and it was good to see how well it worked. Having me right there with her was enough to persuade her that everything was going to be okay. Amazingly, after that, she became one of the most enthusiastic climbers in the group, and I was delighted to see her eagerly shooting up and down numerous climbs.
