Thrill Seeker Bonanza

Today was definitely full on for me. Three sessions, all as part of the BBC Thrill Seeker campaign, was enough to keep me on my feet.

Competitive Canoeing!

Competitive Canoeing!

The morning started off with an adult canoe session on The Mere in Ellesmere. Surprisingly there were only 3 takers this time, which was disappointing, but meant that we could take advantage of having more input per person. It also enabled us to have a very chilled paddle in gorgeous sunshine and great surroundings. Definitely a nice way to start the day.

Things got a bit more manic with the next session – 12 pupils from the local secondary school. Most of the paddling pairs managed to develop a reasonable degree of control, which made playing games very competitive and great fun. It seems to have almost become traditional to finish off with a few ‘wet’ games and challenges, and this was no exception.  We only had one boat actually capsize, but almost everyone ended up getting wet to one degree or another. And, for the second day on the trot, I found myself ticking a quick dip as well.

Trevor Quarry abseil

The afternoon was a much drier affair with a rock climbing and abseiling session at Trevor Quarry near Llangollen. We had  been due to have eight participants but, for one reason or another, two didn’t manage to make it. However, this gave the remaining 6 extra time on the rock which I’m sure they appreciated. We had a go at four different climbs in all, with the second two a bit more challenging than the first. Everyone gave them a good crack and managed to get to the top. Some, however, managed to complete them a little more elegantly than others! After a successful climbing session, it was time to give everyone a chance to try an abseil. There are normally one or two members of a group that decide not to give it a go but, on this occasion, everyone was well up for it and made the most of the opportunity.

A very busy day but, once again, fantastic to work with such a variety of people. Thanks guys for making it a day to remember.
