Canoeing on the River Vyrnwy

Today saw me get out with Chris Hughes, friend and fellow outdoor instructor, and my son Charlie for a paddle on the River Vyrnwy. I must confess that my own canoe hasn’t been on the water for a few months now, due to a broken yoke, but today’s trip was the perfect motivation to get it fixed yesterday.

We met up near Trefnanney this morning to sort out the vehicle shuttle to the end near LLnaymynech and were on the water by 11am. Charlie took charge of the navigation with the informant job of keeping track of progress. Chris hadn’t paddled this stretch of river for a number of years, and I’d never done it, so the job of making sure we didn’t paddle straight passed the car was an important one.

The river was moving quite well and we made good progress. There were a number of sections of slightly bouncy water, but nothing major – a perfect introduction for Charlie to moving water. The stiff southerly breeze made us work quite hard a couple of times but, on the whole, the conditions were very forgiving for the time of year.

After a stop for lunch on a gravelly beach and a few scrapes over awkwardly hidden rocks, we made it to the end in one piece and still dry – perfect.

Another great day out on the river, and the company was pretty good too!

  1. Martin / Charlie,
Thanks for a great paddle today it was really nice just being on the water. However, Martin I think Charlie (he was in the front of the boat) paddled all the way while you just sat ion the back doing the steering occasionally. No wonder Charlie was tired at the end!!

Already looking forward to our next Professional Development Day.

    Happy Paddling
