Adventure Education Weekend with Oswestry School

I’m very fortunate with my work to get to do some awesome things with fantastic people in great places. The Adventure Education weekends with Oswestry School have become one of my favourite fixtures in my work diary. It’s brilliant to get to work with young people with a desire to learn skills, push themselves and have responsible fun in the outdoors.

This time we had cadets mountain walking, rock climbing and kayaking over Friday and Saturday, to enable them to be on parade for Remembrance Sunday. I spent the 2 days working with a small group of 4 paddlers looking to develop their kayaking skills. One had kayaked with me on the previous Adventure Education weekend, but the other three were new to it.

We spent Friday on Llyn Padarn by Llanberis, working in the lagoons on the west side of the lake, before moving to Llynnau Mymbyr by Plas y Brenin (the National Mountain Centre) on Friday. Friday was a bit breezy and we spent the morning finding shelter on the main lake to learn some skills, before using the ‘shoot’ after lunch to put things into practice on moving water.

It’s amazing how quickly some people take to these things, and it was great to see these lads getting stuck in, which is pretty impressive given the temperatures at this time of year.
