Shrewsbury School along the Llangollen Escarpment

The year 10 pupils from Shrewsbury School had a day off lessons today for a Field Day, during which all the pupils got off site to do something a bit different from the usual academic timetable. There were a number of different options available to them, but I joined a member of staff and a group of 17 lads for a walk along the Llangollen Escarpment.

Starting at the Trevor Quarry car park, we made our way westwards up onto the top of the cliffs into what looked like uninspiring weather conditions. In the event, we actually had a pretty good day with no rain and a fair amount of sunshine. There were times when the wind impeded progress , but the lads thought it was great to be able to lean at such crazy angles into the wind.

I must admit that, before we started, I got the impression that some of the boys would rather be elsewhere and would ‘drag their feet’. However, in practice, they made rapid progress, giving us cause to consider extending the planned route.

Our route took us along the top of the escarpment from Trevor Quarry, over well known rock climbing venues, such as Dinbren and Craig Arthur, to World’s End. We then followed the Offa’s Dyke Path, which runs below the escarpment, back to Trevor. After starting with the fear of rain, it was unexpected to finish in the sunshine with requests for ice creams!
